Irish Daily MailYET another fireman was left gasping for air while fighting a blaze in a burning building when his breathing apparatus malfunctioned.

It is the second time in eight weeks this has happened.

It follows an incident in January when the breathing apparatus of two other firemen stopped working during an operation to rescue eight people from a blazing building.

As reported in the Mail at the time, at least another eight 'catastrophic episodes of equipment failures' had been reported to Dublin City Council chiefs in less than two years.

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association have called on the Controller and Auditor General to investigate practises of tendering in the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The concerns were raised as a number of applications for fire and rescue service vehicles that have been approved since 2004 have failed to deliver operational vehicles.

Speaking to The Sunday Business Post , IFESA Chairman, John Kidd said: “I can't stand over incompetent management. We ordered a foam tender [vehicle] in 2006 and it was only delivered last year. That is seven years of knocking around.”

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association said today (Friday, 11 th April) that the forthcoming local elections will be extremely important for the protection of local fire and emergency services into the future.

Speaking at the Annual Delegate Conference of IFESA in Tullow, Co Carlow today National Chairman John Kidd said local election candidates will have to clearly set out their policies for the future of local fire and emergency services which are under threat from cutbacks and rationalisation like never before.

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association (IFESA) said  today  (Friday, March 28 th  ) that  the development of integrated fire based Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on a national basis is now more urgent that ever in the light of the crisis in the National Ambulance Service  (NAS) exposed in the RTE  Primetime Investigates programme broadcast last night.

IFESA National Chairman, John Kidd said the litany of failures and mismanagement of the NAS shown in the programme cannot be addressed adequately under the present NAS  management structures.
