The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association (IFESA) has met with Global Fire Fighter Unions to discuss a range of common issues and concerns facing firefighters globally. Among the issues addressed at the recent International Fire Fighters Union Alliance Summit in Denver, Colorado were the impact of cuts in resourcing of fire services and equipment and emerging health and safety issues facing fire fighters including assault and injury and high incidence of cancer.

John Kidd, IFESA National Chairman and Vice President of the European Firefighters Union Alliance said :

‘Fire-fighters are finding common cause internationally on a range of issues and concerns that confront them. Globally fire fighters have been experiencing tremendous pressures as a result of the fall-out of the financial crisis with public spending and investment in fire-services being cut dramatically. These cuts have resulted in the safety of the public being compromised and greater risks to the health and safety of fire-fighters.'

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association (IFESA) said today (Tuesday) that media reports of talks between the   National Ambulance Service (NAS) and the  National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management to reach agreement to allow the ambulance service request fire fighter assistance without being billed confirmed IFESA's view that the practice of ‘Call Vetting' is widespread and is putting individuals and communities at risk.

IFESA Vice Chairman Ros MacCobb said ‘ IFESA highlighted the growing use of ‘ Call Vetting' where Chief Fire Officers, ambulance personnel and even Gardai are assessing emergency situations before deciding if fire services should be called out – but both the NAS and the Chief Fire Officers denied that the practice was in place. Today's report (in the Irish Examiner ) confirms that ‘Call Vetting' is being increasingly relied on to cut costs and save money at the expense of providing proper and timely fire and emergency services to the public.

Dear Firefighters,

The Irish Fire and Emergency Services Association (IFESA) have voted with over 90% against the Haddington Road Agreement as results from the ballot have shown. This document was discussed at length at a recent National Meeting which saw delegates from both full time and retained from all over the country making the journey to Sallins in County Kildare. It was felt by all concerned that firefighters have given enough already and simply do not have any more to give, the shameful demands and cutbacks being made on the frontline on a day to day basis is having devastating effects on the personnel who are struggling to cope with the effects both on a personal and professional basis. As before this agreement can be revisited by the Government at any stage and their track record in this regard speaks for itself.

IFESA National Chairman, John Kidd said IFESA had warned that the treat to the social welfare payments of retained fire-fighters could drive hundreds of trained and committed fire-fighters from the fire service and increase the fire risk for the public and communities around the country.
